Blot Stains, STOP Rubbing Them!
When a spill or stain first happens, hold off on immediately beginning to scrub. Even though that may be your first inclination. The stain will only get deeper into the carpet if you do that. Instead, use a clean cloth, paper towel, or sponge to gently dab stains with a cleaning solution.
“Blotting is essential. Blotting applies light pressure on the stain to enable soaking, “said Glenn tells us. “Rubbing forces the particles into the fibers, which may cause those fibers to prematurely break down. This means you will damage the carpet and have to replace it sooner than you would like to.”
Here is the next tip. Blotting outward can cause the stain to spread deeper across the carpet, so always blot from the stain’s outer edge inward toward the center.
What kind of cleaning solution should you use?
Well it depends on what you spilled. Water based stains clean up nicely with water or club soda. However, greasy oil based stains may not. Start with white vinegar. Remember to blot and not rub. Afterwards ttry some dish wash soap to cut any remaining grease.
Rinse the area with clean, warm water after removing the discoloration. Brush the carpet fibers back in their normal direction using your hand. Last but not least, spread out several white paper towels over the region and press them down with something heavy like a gallon jug of water.
Leave the towels in place until the carpet is dry. Usually this will be done within 24 hours or so, since they will absorb the moisture from the carpet fibers.
